On Friday, June 1, 2012, most members of the South High School class of 2012 were participating in the regularly scheduled commencement ceremonies in the stadium at South. Because of their success on a national level, two South High School visual artists took an option to graduate early so they could participate in awards festivities for the National Scholastics Art and Writing Awards at Carnegie Hall in New York, New Work.
Kylie Walsh and Sammie Anselmo traveled to New York with their parents, accompanied by sponsoring faculty member Michelle Lynn. The students and Ms. Lynn funded their travel to NYC out of their own pockets because they believe that participation in an event of this nature is a once in a lifetime experience. The students, parents, and Ms. Lynn were thrilled with the experience in NYC, and were excited to have the work of these two outstanding visual art students exhibited on a national stage.
"Our learning community is so proud of these students and their sponsor, Ms. Lynn, for earning this national recogntion." said Fine Arts department chairman Glenn Williams. "Their work is stunning and completely merits this level of award recogntion."
