South High School artist earns top prize at Cleveland Institute of Art competition

"Psychosis" by Michael Baer

South High School junior Michael Baer recently earned top billing at a national competition sponsored by the Cleveland Institute of Art.

Students from Illinois, Ohio, South Carolina, and Wisconsin were being awarded cash prizes and thousands of dollars in scholarship money as winners of the Cleveland Institute of Art's second 2D3D National Art+Design Competition. The winning artworks were selected by a panel of CIA faculty and submitted by 1,076 students representing over 450 American high schools in 42 states.

In addition to the Best in Category and Best in Show awards, jurors offered a "Juror's Special Merit Award" in each category. Categories included Craft, Design, Integrated Media, and Visual Arts.

Baer earned "Best in Show" and "Best in Category" after the competitive adjudication process was finished.  In addition to national recognition for his work, Baer also earned these prizes:

• $2,500 for "Best in Show"
• $500 for "Best in Category"
• $10,000 a year, or $40,000 for four years if attending the Cleveland Institute of Art.
• A high end gift from Faber-Castell, the corporate sponsor for the competition

South High School Fine Arts congratulates Michael Baer and his faculty sponsor Ms. Michelle Ross, for earning this recognition from the Cleveland Institute of Art.  For more information about visual art at South High School, contact Fine Arts Department Chairman Glenn Williams at gwilliams@csd99.org.
