District 99 Supporting the Arts around the World

District 99 is renowned as an arts supportive community. Now, that community of artistic support has been extended to include an emerging theatre in Wittenburg, Germany.

When the District 99 Honors Band was on tour in Europe this summer, an exciting extension of an already thriving exchange took place.

While the District 99 Honors Band was doing a sound-check on stage in Wittenburg, DGS Fine Arts Chairperson Glenn Williams pointed out to DGN Fine Arts Chairperson Brayer Teague a wall of the theater lobby that recognized patrons who have supported the ongoing renovation of the theater through financial contributions. There was immediate agreement that it seemed very appropriate – given the warm reception felt by everyone while in Wittenberg (and those associated with the theater) – that we as a District 99 community could make a donation. So, as we invited the owner of the theater, and her colleague who had coordinated the concert onto the stage for the sharing of our tour shirt, we surprised the audience by announcing that the District 99 Honors Band would pledge a 500 Euro contribution toward the restoration of the theater.

The reaction of the theater patrons that evening was one of stunned suprise. We knew the Wittenburg patrons would be appreciative, but we could not have anticipated the way in which this announcement seemed to literally “take the breath away” from the audience, and the concert coordinator in particular. There was an audible gasp as we offered our financial pledge, and both women had tears in their eyes.

Through partnering with various constituents, the original donation has grown in size and scope. In total, $1,250 US Dollars have been donated to this theater in Wittenburg. Demonstrating the true partnership between the arts at North and South, the DGS Friends of Fine Arts and the DGN Music Boosters each donated $400 US dollars.

The most suprising part of this process came from the District 99 student musicians.

Because of a tour rebate on the trip, students were given the option of retaining a previously paid tour fee or donating the money to the theater in Wittenburg. In total, the 69 student musicians donated $474 US Dollars to this project.

In true partner fashion, students and parent support groups in District 99 came together to donate $1,250 to an emerging theater in a small community in Wittenburg, Germany. The arts are supported in District 99. With this donation, District 99 is able to support the arts around the world.
