South High School Artist Spotlight - Painting II

Fine Arts teacher Katherine O’Truk’s Painting 2 class finished watercolor portraits this week. Students were tasked with creating a monochromatic portrait of someone important to them and then tried to convey a personality trait of that person, or a specific feeling about that person, through manipulation of colors and details in the portrait.

“I chose my friend Jess and I tried to show a more serious and relaxed side of her. Music is her escape from stress so that's why I painted the earbuds,” said junior Keller LamBeau.

“My portrait is of my aunt, Keariyun. I tried to convey a sense of leadership and support because that’s what she brings to me. I kind of see the navy blue as maturity and the orange as happiness and support,” said junior Shamari Reed about her painting.

Students used the diagonal grid technique to draw the portraits onto watercolor paper and then worked in many layers to paint the accurate shapes and forms of the subject they chose.

D99 and D58 Orchestra Students Collaborate in String Festival Workshop

200+ student musicians gathered at Downers Grove South High School today for the 2021 D99/D58 String Festival Workshop. Musicians worked in student led-small groups, focusing on improving performance repertoire.  After small group work, the students gathered on the stage of the new DGS Auditorium for a combined rehearsal.

This festival is in preparation for a combined concert featuring student string musicians from Herrick Middle School, O'Neill Middle School, and the D99 Orchestra. The concert, on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium of South High School, is free and open to the public to attend.

Special thanks to D99 Orchestra director Ms. Amanda Zall, Herrick Middle School Orchestra director Ms. Madelyn Fiene, and O'Neill Middle School Director Ms. Julie Spring for coordinating this event.
