Congrats to 2018 Scholastics Award Recipients and Visual Art Faculty

Pictured here are many of the 40 Scholastic Art Awards recipients from South High School with the visual art faculty. Congratulations to these student artists for their continuing successes in the visual arts!

Singing Hoosiers to perform at Downers Grove South High School!


South High School Fine Arts is proud to collaborate with and sponsor a concert by the world renowned Singing Hoosiers.  The concert will begin at 7:30 PM in the auditorium at South High School.  Admission is free, and the public is cordially invited to attend and experience this world-class choral ensemble.



DGS Artists Honored at 5th IHSAE Art Exhibition sponsored by IHSA






Congratulations to the DGS Fine Arts students who were selected to exhibit work the the Illinois High School Art Exhibition's annual General Exhibition.

Special congratulations to Emmanuelle Copeland for winning one of five Visionary Awards for her painting "Laughter," and to Emma Ansah for winning an Honorable Mention for her drawing "Held Back."  Emmanuelle also won a scholarship to attend American Academy of Art's Early College Program.  Emma also won a scholarship to attend the Cleveland Institute of Art's Early College Program.
The Illinois High School Art Exhibition is a non-for-profit corporation whose mission is the advancement of visual arts education through exhibition.  Developed by teachers for students in 2014, the organization is run by full-time art educators who collaborate with corporate sponsors, art schools/colleges/universities, and participating public, private and charter high schools to celebrate and award the artistic talents of Illinois high school art students.

Congratulations and thanks to District 99 Visual Art teachers Mr. Josh Hoering (Board of Directors and Portfolio Coordinator) and Ms. Katherine O'Truk (General Exhibition Awards Coordinator) for the spirit of volunteerism and service to the IHSAE staff.

Midwest Music Festival Hall of Fame Induction


Congratulations to South High School band director Craig Roselieb for his induction into the Midwest Music Festival Hall of Fame during the awards ceremony of the 32nd Midwest Music Festival.  Mr. Roselieb was recognized not only for his commitment to music education and excellence at South High School, but for his long standing affiliation and success at the Midwest Music Festival.  Congratulations Mr. Roselieb - a richly deserved recognition! 

DGS Bands at the 32nd Midwest Music Festival



Congratulations to the student musicians in the Wind Ensemble and the Wind Symphony for their participation in the 32nd annual Midwest Music Festival held at Lemont High School.
Entering in Class I, the Wind Ensemble earned a Division I rating, the highest rating possible from the panel of adjudicators.  Entering in Class II, the Wind Symphony earned a Division I rating, the highest possible rating from the panel of adjudicators.  Additionally, the Wind Symphony earned the Jim Moore Best Brass Award for Class II as well as the John Paynter Esprit di Corps Award.  Wind Symphony was also awarded first place in Class II out of 8 performing bands.   The students in both bands performed with fluency and artistry, and represented the school and community extremely well both on and off the stage.  Well done Mustang musicians!

Winter Bands Concert - Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble

       





Congratulations to the student musicians from Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble for presenting a fabulous Winter Concert this evening.  Repertoire ranged from Persichietti to Grainger, from Alford to Van Der Roost.

LUNGEVITY Arts Coffee House - what a night!



Congratulations to the student musicians, student artists, art and music faculty and parent volunteers who worked together tonight to make the LUNGEVITY Arts Coffee House such a smashing success.

In total, the event raised just under $2,921 to support lung cancer research through LUNGEVITY.  The silent auction of of student and staff art work alone generated $1,260 of the total amount raised.

Well done Mustang artists and musicians - today was a great day to be a Mustang!


Rotary Scholarships for Music Seniors now being accepted!

Rotary Music Scholarships now being accepted!
The Rotary Club of Downers Grove is now accepting applications for their annual Charles Dickerman Music Scholarship.  Each year teh Rotary Club of Downers Grove presents a $2,000 scholarship check to a deserving high school senior who resides in Downers Grove or in the District 99 attendance area.  Charles Dickerman was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Downers Grove.  He was a nuclear physicist at Argonne National Laboratory who had undergraduate degrees in both physics and music.  Charles stayed involved in music throughout his life and was an avid bagpiper.

Applicants must have their forms postmarked by Wednesday, April 4, 2018.  If selected as a finalist, candidates must be available for an audition and interview of the evening on Monday, April 30, 2018.   
The qualifications to apply for this scholarship are:
  • Be a graduating senior attending a public, private, parochial or home school and reside in the Downers Grove or District 99 attendance area.
  • Plan to pursue a post-secondary education program.
  • Have participated in high school curricular music activities and/or extra-curricular music activities.
  • Composers and/or arrangers qualify for this scholarship.
  • Pursuit of an undergraduate music major or minor is not required.
  • Financial needs is not a criterion for selection.

LUNGEVITY Arts Coffee House - TONIGHT!


Students and parents from South High School Fine Arts are joining together to raise awareness and funds for lung cancer research by supporting LUNGEVITY.

Rescheduled to Monday, February 12, 2018 from 6:30-8:30 PM in the Cafetorium at South High School, the "LUNGEVITY Coffee House" will feature student performers and visual art work for sale through silent auction.  A $10 donation will be requested at the door, and coffee and assorted dessert treats will be available for purchase with all proceeds from the donation and food sales going to benefit LUNGEVITY.  Parent volunteers from FOFA, Mustang Band Boosters, and Choir Boosters are joining together to convert the DGS Cafetorium into a coffee house environment!

The public is cordially invited to attend this event - come out, support a great cause, hear some fabulous music, bid on some stunning student art work and enjoy some yummy treats in a casual, coffee house atmosphere.

ISU Wind Ensemble and Applied Faculty Tour Stop - DG South HS












South High School Fine Arts and the Mustang Bands were thrilled to host the Applied Faculty from Illinois State University and the Wind Symphony, conducted by Anthony Marinello, for a morning of musical collaboration.  The ISU Applied Faculty delivered master classes and clinics to DGS students in Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble, sharing insights into improved performance and artistry.  Following the break out sessions, the Illinois State University Wind Symphony performed for all of the band students, featuring the Applied Faculty as soloists with the ISU Wind Symphony and in Chamber Ensembles. 

Special thanks to ISU alum Mr. Hensel for coordinating this experience for the student musicians of South High School.  It was a marvelous morning of shared ideas and artistry, inspiring for students and performers alike.  Special thanks also to the College of Fine Arts at Illinois State University for facilitating this tour and this outreach event here at South High School.

2018 DG South High School Winter Guard Festival





Congratulations to the students, staff and parents affiliated with the DG South Winter Guard for hosting a successful festival this afternoon.  17 units from all around Illinois competed in the main gym at South and received feedback from an expert panel of adjudicators.

The South High School Winter Guard continued their success this season, scoring a 64.220 and placing 2nd in their Class.

Special shout-out to the volunteers affiliated with the Mustang Band Boosters for providing the smooth logistical backdrop for this event.  Student units, props and equipment moved efficiently and in a timely manner throughout the contest.

2018 Scholastic Art Show Opening








Congratulations to the 1,271 student artists from 30 different high schools schools who are participants the 2018 Chicagoland Scholastics Regional Art Show.  These students are supported by 130 different teachers and submitted 2,945 works of art and 75 art portfolios for adjudication. 

40 South High School visual art students merited 94 awards, including 36 Gold Key Awards, 32 Silver Key Awards, 25 Honorable Mention Awards and one American Vision Award nominee.  American Vision Award nominees are considered the "Best of Show" by the judging panel and only five pieces from the entire region are selected for this prestigious honor. 

Special thanks to the District 99 Visual Art faculty for sponsoring and hosting this show, now in the 9th year in District 99.  Double special shout-out to exhibition chair Mr. Marty Voelker from DGN for tirelessly promoting the work of these student artists in our region. 

The show remains open from 6:30-900 PM in the main lobby at North High School until Friday, February 9, 2018.  The public is cordially invited to view the exhibition, which features some of the finest student art work the state of Illinois has to offer.
