2017 Walgreens Expressions Challenge - VOTE NOW!

The Expressions Challenge is about guiding students to make better life choices about their overall health and well-being.  There is no means of expression more personal or self-revelatory than art. By combining artistic expression with individual student research, Expressions empowers students to positively influence their classmates, school and community.  Teens are encouraged to use their voice through art to communicate their perspective on topics including bullying, self-esteem and sexual responsibility.

Several South High School AP Digital Photography students have submitted pieces in the challenge.  Please, take a moment to vote for these very talented artists by clicking on the link below:

Jhenevie Oca, Annmarie Elsner, Sydney Antiporek, Samantha Perkins, Hailey Rodden, and Kristina Totoraitis have all entered work in this national contest.  Please search each student artist by typing their first name into the search box to vote for their piece.  Thanks for your support of our Mustang artists!

Music Moves Us - D99/D58 2017 Fall Concert

This evening more than 200 student musicians from four schools and two districts gathered to celebrate music as the District 99 Orchestra sponsored the "Music Moves Us" concert.  The repertoire during the concert celebrated dance music from nearly one dozen different cultures, highlighted by student program notes and slides to highlight the meaning of the music for the patrons.  The capacity crowd in the auditorium departed with a palpable enthusiasm for the success of the concert, both in the diversity of repertoire and in the fabulous performances by all the student musicians.

Thanks to the O'Neill Middle School Orchestra, Julie Spring, director, and the Herrick Middle School Orchestra, Madeline Fiene, director, for their significant sonic contributions to this performance.
Thanks also to D99 Orchestra director Jennifer Mullen for envisioning and planning such a collaborative event.  Special thanks to Mr. Dan O'Connell for leading the District 99 Orchestras with artistic grace and elegance during the preparation of this event.

2017 ILMEA District Audition Results

The music faculty, private teachers and sender school music teachers associated with South High School are proud to recognize the students that earned 37 placements in band, choir, jazz band and orchestra.  On Wednesday, October 11,  69 student musicians from South High School in Downers Grove took a total of 84 auditions at Carl Sandburg High School to participate in the 2017  Illinois Music Education Association District 1 Festivals.  These students have been selected through a highly competitive audition to participate in the 2017 ILMEA District Festivals.

Student musicians enrolled in music ensembles in the DGS Fine Arts department continue to annually demonstrate remarkable success at both the District and All-State level. "The total number of participating students continues to be consistently high on an annual basis." said DGS Fine Arts Chairman Glenn Williams. "Additionally, DGS is equally well represented in all areas of ensemble performance – band, choir, orchestra, and jazz band - in this process."

2017 Marching Mustang Music Bowl

The 15th  Music Bowl concluded with a stunning performance from your Marching Mustangs - an explosive performance of "Fly On" that was well received by both the audience and the panel of judges.

A special "thank you" goes out to the more than 200 volunteers that contributed to the success of the Music Bowl this year with a special "shout-out" to the 2017 Music Bowl Co-Chairs Dorothy Danielle and Kelly Wygonski.  An event of this magnitude doesn't happen except through a remarkable spirit of positive volunteerism. Bands and communities from across the state of Illinois were shown today the best that District 99 has to offer.

A special tribute tonight was given to Mr. Roselieb by current and former students.  The students recognized Mr. Roselieb through a musical tribute that honored his career impacting students through the teaching of music which began at South High School in 1990.  We all wish you nothing but the best Mr. Roselieb as you "Fly On" at the end of this year!
