2015 Band Camp Preview Show #99Learns @DGS_Bands

Parents, family members, alumni and marching arts enthusiasts flocked to the campus at South High School tonight for the 2015 Band Camp Preview Show.  After a delicious and nutritious meal, the crowd matriculated to the stadium to experience the section cheer competition and the musical and visual learning that took place during the past week.

The band has learned the entire show during camp this year, titled "Beyond the Titans."  The music of Gustav Mahler provides the sonic back drop to tell the mythical tale of Perseus and Andromeda.

Congratulations to the students and staff affiliated with the Marching Mustangs for an extremely productive week.  Thanks to the administration and CMG staff at South High School for facilitating such an excellent week of camp.  Thanks to the Mustang Band Boosters for feeding and hydrating the ensemble during the course of the week.

A fabulous foundation has been put in place for a successful season!

Larissa Gurnic, 2016 US Army All-American #99Learns @DGS_Bands

Summer is nearly over, and all around the country band camp approaches, if it is not already underway. The sounds of drum lines, Dr. Beat, band directors’ commands on school PA systems, and beautiful music repeated until perfected will fill the air, as marching bands on high school campuses around the country prepare for the coming school year.

For 125 of those high school marching band students, this school year will be particularly exciting.
Senior Sousaphone player Larissa Gurnic was chosen, through competitive audition, to be a member of the 2016 US Army All-American Marching Band. Larissa submitted three separate audition videos featuring marching, playing, and articulating her desire to be a US Army All-American.

The band, chosen from more than 1,300 auditioning students from 47 states, is comprised of 125 of the finest high school senior marching musicians in America.  Each member receives an all-expense paid trip to San Antonio, Texas in January of 2016.  Band members will rehearse with nationally renowned instructors for a week, culminating in a performance at the US Army All-American Bowl at the Alamo Dome, an annual East vs. West High School football game that features 90 of the best high school football players in America.  This game is viewed live by more than 38,000 spectators, and, will garner a live viewing audience on NBC of more than 2.5 million viewers.

Congratulations to Larissa for achieving this prestigious selection.  Thanks for the high standards you set on the field and in the music suite each and every day.  Have a great season and an even better time in San Antonio - Go Mustangs!!!

Despite an early incursion with some contentious weather, Band Camp 2015 is well on the way to becoming a sonic and visual success for the students and staff involved.  In this week alone, students and staff have logged over 60 hours working to learn and produce the music and movement that comprise the show.  The production, titled "Beyond the  Titans," features music from Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 1.

The ensemble will present a culmination of learning from the week during an exhibition performance on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 7:15 PM in the stadium at South High School.  The public is cordially invited to attend this free performance, which will last around 30 minutes.
