2012 Marching Mustangs at 46th Annual ISU Marching Band Championships



Congratulations to the 2012 Marching Mustangs for their season concluding performance at the State of Illinois Marching Band Championships at Illinois State University on Saturday, October 27,2012.  In a highly competitive field in classes 5A and 6A, the Marching Mustangs finished 5th in Class 6 A.  Of the 42 marching ensembles that performed and competed throughout the day, the Marching Mustangs finished 14th in the preliminary competition.  The Marching Mustangs concluded the year with their strongest performance, setting an upward trajectory for the 2013 fall campaign.

Kudos, congratulations and gratitude are extended to the student marching artists, staff and the small army of parent volunteers that worked together to make this season such a success.

2012 BOA Indianapolis Super Regionals










Current and former members of the Marching Mustangs from South High School in Downers Grove performed at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana today for the 2012 Bands of America Super Regionals.  The Marching Mustangs were one of 60 bands that performed over the course of two days. Bands from as far away as Florida (Clear Creek HS in Orlando) competed at this event.

After the prelims were completed, the Marching Illini from the University of Illinois performed in exhibition.  Former Marching Mustangs Brad Jones, Sam Kotlicky, Callie Sorce and Shannon Rooney were on the field with the Marching Illini.  In the marching arts, today was indeed a great day to be a Mustang......

2012 Final Home Football Game - Marching Mustangs





The Marching Mustangs led the spirit in the stands and performed at halftime with passion and excellence during the final home football game of the season.  In a few hours, the band will depart for the BOA Super Regional at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.  A great job in every capacity tonight by the Marching Mustangs - good luck in Indy!

South HS Choirs 2012 Fall Concert










The South High School choral program presented their 2012 Fall Concert this evening.  More than 275 singers performed in 9 different ensembles.  The variety of repertoire performed was enticing.  The challenging nature of the repertoire was also apparent as several ensembles performed IMEA District and All-State selections.  The patrons left the auditorium completely abuzz after the rousing concluding combined number.  Congratulations to the student performers and to their teachers and conductors Joy Belt-Roselieb, Laura Coster and Belford Hernandez.

2012 IMEA DISTRICT FESTIVAL AUDITION RESULTS

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, 103 student musicians from South High School in Downers Grove auditioned at Carl Sandburg High School to participate in the 2012 Illinois Music Educators’ Association District 1 Festivals.  The music faculty, private teachers and sender school music teachers associated with South High School are proud to congratulate the 51 students in band, choir, jazz band, and orchestra who have been selected through highly competitive audition to participate in the 2012 IMEA District Festivals.
Student musicians enrolled in music ensembles in the DGS Fine Arts department continue to annually demonstrate remarkable success at both the District and All-State level. “The total number of participating students continues to be consistently high on an annual basis.” said DGS Fine Arts Chairman Glenn Williams. “We’ve averaged over 50 participants in the IMEA District ensembles for over a decade.”  “Additionally, DGS is equally well represented in all areas of ensemble performance – band, choir, orchestra and jazz band - in this process.”

South HS Choirs Fall Concert - this coming Thursday!

 
Student musicians in the South HS Choirs are busy preparing for their Fall Choral Concert which takes place on Thursday, October 18th, 2012 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium at South High School.  Over 280 choral musicians performing in 9 different choirs will present a wide breadth of choral literature.  Admission is free and the public is cordially to attend.

10th Mustang Music Bowl a resounding success!



A resounding congratulations to the students in the Marching Mustangs for the double exhibition performance at the 10th annual Mustang Music Bowl.  The ensemble continues to improve sonically and visually as the season progresses.

A special shout out also to the Mustang Band Boosters for their work to coordinate this event.  For the first time, 23 marching ensembles competed and performed in a prelims/finals format at South High School.  Forging ahead through potentialy catastrophic weather conditions, the organization created a successfuly performance and competition venue for more than 3,000 student marching artists during the course of the event.

D58 and D99 Orchestras Halloween SPOOKFEST!

Congratulations to the nearly 200 string players from Downers Grove District 58 and 99 and their conductors Colleen Eakley, Mackenzie Martin and Jennifer Mullen for the collaborative effort that was "Halloween Spookfest."  The seasonal theme, decorations, and repertoire combined to make an evening that was exceptional for performers and patrons alike.  The success of string education in D58 and D99 was evident tonight through the collaboration of students and teachers and the depth and breadth of the literature performed.

D99 Orchestra "Spookfest" - Tuesday, October 16, 2012





The District 99 Orchestra is preparing today for "Spookfest," a seasonally themed concert which takes place on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium at South High School in Downers Grove.

In addition to performing Mussorgsky's A Night on Bald Mountain, the D99 Orchestras will also perform additional seasonally frightening repertoire.  Special guests on this concert will be students from the orchestra at both Herrick Middle School and O'Neill Middle School in District 58.  Our sender school guests from District 58 will join the D99 orchestra in several side by side selections during the concert. 

Thanks in advance for choosing to attend this event - the combination of the theme and the performed repertoire will ensure this concert will be a crowd pleaser!

D99 Orchestra "Spooktacular" Festival




 
Over 200 student string musicians participated in the inaugural District 99/District 58 string festival, which included students from South High School, North High School, Herrick Middle School and O'Neill Middle School.  The festival is in preparation for the D99 "Spooktacular" Concert which will take place on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium at South High School in Downers Grove.

During the festival that occured today,  student string musicians from Herrick and O'Neill came to DGS and participated in sectionals, a large group rehearsal, and a pizza dinner.  "We are thrilled to get this first festival off the ground with both sender school orchestras." said District 99 Orchestra director Jennifer Mullen.  "We are pleased with the results from today, and we are excited for the concert coming up on October 16th."
