2012 Purdue Jazz Festival

Four jazz performing groups from South High School in Downers Grove performed and competed at the 2012 Purdue University Jazz Festival in West Lafayette, Indiana on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The Jazz Ensemble, 7:00 AM Combo and 3:30 PM Combo all earned Division I ratings, Jazz Lab Band earned a Division II rating. The 3:30 PM Combo earned "Oustanding Performance" citation from the judges, placing 2nd in their room.

Junior pianist Ian Williams was chosen by the judges as the Outstanding Soloist in the West Faculty Lounge performance site. Senior alto saxophonist Michael Ruth earned special praise from the juding panel, earning a 1/2 tuition scholarship to the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Camp and a 1/2 tuition scholarship to the University of Indianapolis Summer Combo Camp.

In addition to the judges praise for the ensembles, 18 students musicians earned 28 outstanding soloists/musicians based on their performance during the day:

Just over 250 student jazz musicians from the articulated learning community at South High School in Downers Grove participated in the 2012 Jazz Cafe on Thursday, January 19, 2012. In addition to student musicians from South High School, students from O'Neill Middle School, Jefferson Junior High School, Lakeview Junior High School, and Eisenhower Junior high school celebrated jazz performance in Downers Grove. Guest artist Dr. Bob Lark from DePaul University provided additional musical luster to the evening by soloing with the DGS ensembles. D99 Orchestra students at the Midwest Clinic

The 65th Midwest Clinic (formerly known as the 'Midwest-International Band & Orchestra Clinic') was held this week in Chicago last week. It is the largest annual gathering of music teachers, performers. and music industry personnel in the world. Attended by nearly 16,000 from all 50 states and 30 countries internationally, the concert features nearly 30 concerts and 90 clinic sessions.

Congratulations to DGN Orchestra student Hannah Young (Harp), DGS Orchestra student Andrew Molina (Cello) who performed at the convention with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. The South High Fine Arts Department salutes all of you for your outstanding musicianship!

Congratulations to the DGS Jazz Ensemble and their director Craig Roselieb for being accepted to perform at the 65th annual MidWest Clinic. This ensemble will perform on Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 1:00 PM in room W-196. Held at McCormick West Place in Chicago, the MidWest Clinic is annually attended by nearly 16,000 professional educators from all 50 states and from more than 30 countries internationally. Each conference features nearly 30 concerts and 90 clinics by the finest performing ensembles and music educators from around the world.

Rehearsals and preparations are underway for the 2011 Winter Art Show and Holiday Concert at South High School in Downers Grove. The visual art work of more than 500 student artists and the sonic collaboration of more than 700 student musicians will adorn the halls of South High School in the coming days. The Winter Art show opens at 6 PM in the Events Foyers on Thursday, December 8, 2011 and runs all weekend during regular business hours. The Holiday Concert begins at 7 PM on Thursday, December 8th in the Main Gymanasium. Both events are free and the public is cordially invited to attend.

2012 South High School All-State Musicians

18 student musicians from Downers Grove South High School were selected by competitive audition to the 2011-2012 Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Band, Choir, Orchestra, Jazz Band and Composer Showcase. Auditions were held last October at Carl Sandburg High School; musical compositions were evaluated by professional musicians and composers from across the country.
“This is a tremendous honor for these students,” said Glenn Williams, Fine Arts Department Chairman at South High. “All-State selection represents the pinnacle of musical achievement for a high school student musician. We are very proud of our students, and look forward to hearing their performances in January.”

In addition to these individual student performers, the Jazz Ensemble from South High School has been selected to perform at the 2012 Illinois Music Education Conference. This excellent ensemble performs on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 8:00 PM in the Peoria Convention Center.

Grammy award winning conductor and music educator Dr. Cheryl Frazes-Hill visited South High School today with select members of the Roosevelt University/Chicago College of Performing Arts Conservatory Chorus. Dr. Frazes-Hill worked with the DGS Madrigal Singers, emphasizing linear musical phrasing and blend between voices. The clinic with Dr. Frazes-Hill was followed by a performance of Rossini's Petite Messe Solenelle by members of the CCPA Conservatory Chorus. This graduate level chorus is comprised of students studying to be professional opera singers. The beauty of the sounds that filled the DGS choir room was palpalable. Special thanks to Roosevelt University for providing this opportunity for the student musicians at South High School this afternoon.

NBC 5 "Prep destination of the week" and the Marching Mustangs

As part of the requirements for the Girl Scouts Gold Award, Katie is creating sillouhettes of performing musicians in the entry hallway to the DGS music suite. Marching Mustangs make South High School History

During the 2010 competitive marching season, the Marching Mustangs from South High School in Downers made history by qualifying for finals competition at the Invitational Marching Band Championships at Illinois State University. In 2010, the Marching Mustangs finished in 11th place in finals with a score of 69.90.

During the 2011 competitive marching season, the Marching Mustangs created unprecedented historical success, both at South High School and in the competitive marching bands.

"I've never heard of or seen this much competitive improvement in one year" said DG South Fine Arts Chairman Glenn Williams. "This improvement trajectory is simple awesome."

During preliminary competition at ISU, the Marching Mustangs finished second place in Class 6A, winning the caption for Best General Effect and earning a spot, for the second year in a row, in finals competition.

"This year, there were 45 competing marching ensembles in the event at ISU." said Department Chairman Glenn Williams. "Heading into the invitational at ISU, the competition among the top bands was fierce. With automatic bids, only 14 bands qualify for the evening finals performance."

Based on a random draw, the Marching Mustangs were chosen to perform last in the finals competition, stepping off at approximately 10:44 PM. This is the moment when South High School history was about to be made.

The judging panel scores were tabulated and the results were announced, first starting with 14th place and then moving to 5th place. "When our school wasn't called, my heart was pounding." said junior drum major Josiah Williams. Then, came the history making moment. The public address announcer read the results, boldly proclaiming the Marching Mustangs as 4th place with a score of 83.55. A historically unprecedented leap from 2010, both in terms of score and final placement.

The Marching Mustangs will continue to perform at home play-off football games, and, will appear in the nationally televised McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade in Chicago, IL. South HS Fine Arts and IHSA Play-off Football

Students in the Fine Arts at South High School played their parts in the opening round of the IHSA play-offs at DGS on Friday, October 28, 2011. The Madrigal Singers performed a stunning unaccompanied rendition of the National Anthem, and the Marching Mustangs revved the crowd from the stands and performing with poise and precision at halftime.

Illini Marching Band Championships

On Saturday, October 22, 2011, 47 high school marching bands competed in the Illini Marching Band Championships in Memorial Stadium on the campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana, Illinois. Bands from Antioch to Rock Island, from Watseka to Effingham performed and competed throughout the course of the day.

Of the 6 bands in Class 6A, your Marching Mustangs finished in first place, earning caption awards for Outstanding Music, Outstanding Visual and Outstanding Auxiliary. Of the 47 bands during the course of the competition day, the Marching Mustangs finished 4th place overall. Additionally, the Marching Mustangs earned a score of 90.05, the highest competitive score in recent memory for the Marching Mustangs.

Gaudete Brass residency continues......

The Gaudete Brass continued their residency in Downers Grove today, rehearsing at Eisenhower Junior High School and at South High School. The Gaudete Brass is performing with Lakeview Band, the Eisenhower Band and the DGS Wind Ensemble on November 15, 2011 at 7:00 PM in the Auditorium at South High School. Tubsit and quintet member Scott Tegge teaches tuba and euphonium at South and North High Schools. From the sounds coming from area rehearsal rooms, this is a performance you won't want to miss!

The South High School Choirs, over 280 strong in 8 different choral ensembles, presented an amazingly captivating concert this evening. Repertoire ranged from gospel to madrigal, from broadway to contemporary, from folk song to art song. Every single ensemble was sonically stunning this evening. The audience was treated to multiple "goose-bump" moments throughout the course of the evening. Great job tonight Mustang singers - you did us all proud tonight!

On Tuesday, October 11, 2011, 96 student musicians auditioned at Carl Sandburg High School to participate in the 2011 Illinois Music Educators' Association District 1 Music Festival. The music faculty, private teachers and sender school music programs associated with South High School in Downers Grove are proud to congratulate the 55 student musicians who earned a spot in band, choir, orchestra, jazz band and vocal jazz.

"IMEA District 1 is one of the most competitive districts in Illinois." said South High Fine Arts Chairman Glenn Williams. " Since 2005, South High School has annually averaged 54 students auditioning into IMEA District 1 ensembles. We are proud of the success of our student musicians over this period of time."

The IMEA District 1 Band, Choir and Orchestra Festival will be hosted by South High School on Saturday, November 19, 2011. The concert is at 4:00 PM in the Main Gymnasium. Admission is $5 for this event, which will be attended by more than 1,000 audience members.

Featured above, the concert concluded with a combined rendition of a medley from Pirates of the Carribean featuring the D99 Symphony Orchestra and the Herrick Middle School Orchestra. A highlight of the evening was guest soloist Jennifer Leckie performed Saraste's challenging Zigeunerweisen to a rave audience ovation.

The D99 Concert Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra performed stunning repertoire, ranging from Bach's Little Fugue in g minor to Vaughan Williams' Concerto Grosso for String Orchestra.

Special thanks to Lisa Rose and the Herrick Middle School Orchestra for opening and closing the performance. Great to see and hear these future D99 Orchestra members on the stage at North High this evening!

DGS Fine Arts was well represented in the 2011 Homecoming Variety Show. The award winning Jazz Ensemble opened the show with Straighten Up and Fly Right, featuring the amazing vocal jazz stylings of senior Colleen DeRosa. DeRosa was also a member of the world class team of emcees.

Of special note, The Walkout performed a never before heard or seen rendition of the DGS Alma Mater. Alumni in attendance at the event commented they had never experienced anything quite like the emotion they felt when The Walkouts performed the South High Alma Mater.

The show runs for one more evening, Thursday, October 14, 2011 at 7 PM in the South High School Auditorium. Tickets are available at the door.

Composer John Mackey continued his residency at South High School, engaging in a question and answer dialog with Concert Band and Symphonic Band. Wind Symphony performed Xerxes and gained immediate feedback and insight from the composer. John Mackey's residency at South High School in Downers Grove continued this morning as he spent time coaching student composer Zach Plata and a chamber woodwind ensemble. By listening to themes on Mr. Mackey's web site, Zach created an arrangement of John Mackey themes for a woodwind ensemble. Mr. Mackey spent time coaching both Zach and the student musicians in the ensemble on how best to continue to develop the arrangement. Mr. Mackey's opening words to Zach were "Write more of your own stuff and less of my stuff." Dialog also continued regarding creating effective transitions between themes, and as always, getting performers to interpret with effective dynamic contrast.

Composer John Mackey http://www.ostimusic.com/ is engaging in a "mini-residency" at South High School in Downers Grove on September 27-28, 2011. This evening, Mr. Mackey attended his first marching band rehearsal ever, experiencing his music being realized on the field by the Marching Mustangs.

The Marching Mustangs 2011 competition show titled River Visions, features works composed by Mr. Mackey, including Strange Humors, Hymn to a Blue Hour, and Kingfishers Catch Fire.

The only thing more palpable than the excitement in and around Mr. Mackey's arrival was the growth of the student musicians. Hearing direction from the composer of the music creates a unique sense of authority which creates tremendous relevance for the students. The subtle musical concepts being presented and rehearsed on the marching field tonight were impressive.

The Marching Mustangs competed in Class 2A at the 44th Chicagoland Marching Band Festival at Wheeling High School. At the end of the evening, the Marching Mustangs earned the caption for Best Music Performance and Best Drum Majors. With a score of 72.00, the Marching Mustangs were 2nd place in Class 2A and 5th place overall out of 23 competing ensembles.

The annual Cross Town Classic football game took place this evening. While the football teams from North and South High Schools in Downers Grove squared off against each other on the field, the student musicians joined forces in multiple ways throughout the course of the evening.

Conducted by North High Band director and South High alum Bill Miller, the combined marching bands and choirs from both North and South joined forces to perform a stunning National Anthem prior to the game. In addition to sharing the field for the pre-game festivities, the bands performed a combined dance team number, featuring the Athenas from DGN and the Fillies from DGS. We are proud of every student musician that joined in the collaborative efforts to help celebrate just how much music is a part of the schools and the community here in Downers Grove.

Mustang Marching Band at 33rd Annual Lancer Joust

On Saturday, September 10, 2011, the Marching Mustangs competed at the 33rd annual Lancer Joust at Lake Park High School in Roselle, Illinois.

Competing in Class 2A in preliminary competition, the Marching Mustangs tied for third place, finishing in a tie in the caption award for Best Visual Effect. Additionally, the Marching Mustangs were one of 10 out of 25 bands that qualified to perform in the evening finals event.

During the finals, the Marching Mustangs place 6th overall. Great showing at the Lancer Joust - way to get your season off on the "right" foot!

Gaudete Brass Quintet at South High School

The Gaudete Brass http://www.gaudetebrass.com/ performed and provided a professional musicianship master class for the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Symphony and Wind Ensemble at South High School in Downers Grove. Founded in 2004, this Chicago-based quinted is emerging as a national force on the brass scene, commissioning several recent works from notable composers around the world.

Tubist and founding member Scott Tegge teaches tuba/euphonium at both South and North High Schools in Downers Grove. This residency is, in part, to prepare for a performance on Tuesday, November 15 at 7:00 PM in the South High School Auditorium. In November, the Gaudete Brass will perform a concerto with the South HS Wind Ensemble, and, will perform with the Lakeview Junior High School and Eisenhower Junior High School Bands on the same concert. The 2011 Marching Mustangs participated in multiple premieres this evening. First, the premiere of the new uniforms, which showed well on the field and showed the spirit and pride of the ensemble. Second, the band premiered thier first public performance on the new turf in the stadium at South High School.

As always, the band led well from the stands and "wowed" the crowd during halftime. The applause from the crowd was both generous and genuine. Great job tonight Marching Mustangs!

Throngs of people gathered at Lakeview Junior High School this evening to experience the unveiling of the Marching Mustangs 2011 Show, "River Visions," featuring the music of John Mackey and Andrew Boysen, Jr.

Esprit de corps is defined as a sense of unity and of common interests among a group of people closely associated with a task or a cause.

This ensemble, and the supporting parents and community, have a palpable esprit de corps. Musically and visually, this show is impressive. The amount of work these students accomplished this week is impressive. However, most impressive of all is the experience of seeing a group of students, fully supported by a community of parents, moving in the same direction. This is going to be a really, really, really fun season............

South High School in Downers Grove and the Marching Mustangs continue to be well represented in a variety of marching activities beyond District 99.

During the week of August 11-13, the Drum Corps International Championships were held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Alums Brad Jones (Cavaliers,) Sam Bottorff (Scouts,) and Jessica Colip (Colts) performed and competed among the best marching ensembles in the world. Marching Mustang staff member Scott Oliver spent the summer touring with the Madison Scouts, working as part of the Scouts visual tech team. Returning South student Megan Schreck spent the summer performing and competing with the Colt Cadets from Dubuque, Iowa.

2011 Madrigals Graduation Concert

The 61st public performance by a DGS music ensemble this school year was the 2011 South High School Madrigal Singers graduation concert tonight, a concert which in part gave a personal tribute to the departing seniors in the ensemble. The balance, blend, and intonation of this remarkable ensemble are breathtaking. A wide range of challenging, collegiate level repertoire was performed with captivating musicianship.

I personally believe that a litmus test of the success of a high school music program lies in the ability of an individual student musician to cast and execute a vision for musical excellence without interference from an adult educator. One reason that I adore this concert each year is that the departing seniors are afforded the opportunity to do just that - the musicians select, rehearse, and perform literature of their own accord without any teacher intervention. This performance, perhaps above all others, is truly a student-centered event. The ensemble was fabulous, but, the departing seniors each displayed that they are ready to depart DGS and pursue music lifelong on their own. Well done Class of 2011 Madrigal Singers - we will miss you all dearly!

The only thing better than the sights during the D99 orchestra concert were the sounds created by the student musicians in the orchestra. Special shout out to seniors Melissa Vos, violin and Nikki Mihelich, cello, for performing senior solos with surpassing musicianship. The film music during the performance captivated the audience throughout the evening. The Star Wars score was presented with professional execution by the student performers. Capping the evening with more than 20 alums performing under the baton of John Svoboda brought the crowd to their feet with an immediate and sincere standing ovation. The only thing brighter than the shirts on the players was the smile on the faces of the audience members after this fabulous group concluded their performance tonight.

5th Annual Chamber Music Night

The DG South Concert Percussion Ensemble, coached by Dwayne Rawl, performed this evening, continuing to impress the audience with their technique and musicianship. The concluding Danse Bacchanale nearly brought the house to their feet.

The Flute Choir, coached by Laurel Tempas, played with musical maturity and blazingly impressive technique.

11th Annual RAKU Day - April 21, 2011

Led by DG South visual art teacher Kathy Myles, DGS student ceramicists today embarked on the 11th annual Raku/Primitive Firing field trip. Raku pottery is created with a specific ceramic firing process that uses both fire and smoke to create unique patterns and designs. The student work that emerges from the smoke and fire of the day is visually stunning. Look for this brilliantly developed pieces during the coming Spring Art Show starting on Thursday, May 19, 2011. Way to go, DGS student ceramicists!!

DGS Jazz Ensemble at IMEA All-State Conference

Through competitive taped audition, the Jazz Ensemble from South High School in Downers Grove has been selected to perform at the 2012 Illinois Music Educators' Assocation All-State Conference on Thursday, January 27, 2012 at the Conference and Convention Center in Peoria, Illinois.

Numerous groups from the state of Illinois apply to perform at this pretigious state conference. With more than 5,000 members, the IMEA is one of the largest state professional music educator organizations in the nation. The IMEA sponsors and organizes performance festival experiences for the student musicians of Illinois and provides professional growth opportunities for the music educators of Illinois.

"We are thrilled that this group of student musicians can continue to perform on a grander professional stage." said department chairman Glenn Williams. "The jazz educators in Illinois will depart inspired after hearing this stellar ensemble."

Fine Arts and CTE 2011 Instrument Petting Zoo

Collaboration between the Career and Technical Education and Fine Arts Departments today created some wonderful benefits for a wide range of students.

Pre-school aged students and their "high school friends" enrolled in the Parenting in the CTE Department class came to the music suite for an opportunity to listen to and actively explore making music on instruments.

Student musicians in Wind Symphony demonstrated on their instruments, then, an "Instrument Petting Zoo" was set up around the room that provided the pre-school aged children with the opportunity to try-out the instruments.

The pre-school aged students gained a heightened awareness of how to make music on instruments, and, the high school aged students in both CTE and Fine Arts developed their comprehension through teaching fundamentals of instrument performance. Special thanks to Katie Gonzalez from CTE for her role in making this happen for all of the students involved.

German Entourage in the Windy City

Today our friends from Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany visited the Sky Deck at the former Sears Tower and spent time exploring Millennium Park. The bright, sunny weather was a welcome change from the previous two days. Students and chaperones alike were "wowed" by the amazing sights that abound in the city of Chicago.

Jazz at the Movies - featuring BB Music School German Big Band

The Big Band from the Music School in Beitigheim-Bissingen, Germany, wows the throng gathered at the Tivoli for the "Jazz at the Movies" concert tonight.
After being in existence as an ensemble for only 2.5 years, this ensemble played a wide variety of jazz literature, including classics from the Basie library and Lee Morgan's incomparable "Sidewinder."
The Big Band from BB Germany brought the crowd to their feet for two encores at the end of the concert this evening.
The New York city bound DGS Jazz Ensemble wowed the crowd with swinging renditions of their Essentially Ellington repertoire.

This is a photo of the crowd during the Jazz Lab Band performance. If you look carefully, you can see everyone saying "cheese."
Theatre organist David Rhoades performed a 30 minute recital prior to the concert, and, accompanied the Buster Keaton silent film "The Blacksmith" to begin the evening of "Jazz at the Movies."

The Tivoli theatre marquee in Downers Grove welcomes the jazz performers and concert patrons to this very special event.

Exchange of gifts and an intvitation to continue

Prior to the culminating piece of the concert, the faculty and chaperones from the BB Germany Music School and D99 exchanged gifts. This tradition is part of the fabric of nearly every exchange relationship that exists both in the USA and abroad, and we are proud to continue in this habit. Because the exchange is now more than 25 years old, relationships are continuing through generations.

Reimund Schiffer, director of the BB Music School Germany, extended an invitation to the D99 Honors Band to visit Germany in June of 2012, which Brayer Teague on behalf of the students and staff heartily accepted.

The musical and cultural exchange that exists between D99 and the BB Germany Music School is now more than a quarter century old. The foundations of this exchange are music, culture and relationships. To celebrate every aspect of this exchange, a concert was held last night in the North High School Johnson Auditorium, featuring the Bietigheim-Bissingen/Germany Music School ensemble JugenBlasOrchester. The North High Wind Ensemble and South High Wind Ensemble also performed on this celebratory event.

The concert opened with a fabulous pre-concert theatre organ recital and got better as the evening progressed. The South and North High Wind Ensembles performed challenging repertoire with poise and precision. The BB Germany Music School JBO then performed a diverse and challenging program, culminating with multiple standing ovations and encore selections. Congratulations to the student musicians from both continents for expanding their boundaries through the sharing of music, of culture, and of relationships.

Tonight's soccer friendly between District 99 and the Musikschule of Bietigheim-Bissingen was a great evening of sportsmanship, friendship, and surprising results. In a stunning turn of global fortunes, the USA team quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead before eventually winning 5-2.

Congratulations to all of the student participants, as well as all family members and supporters who came out to cheer.

Hinsdale Center for the Arts Showcases High School Artists

Artworks created by young artists from 12 area high schools are currently on display at Hinsdale Center for the Arts' (HCA) 24th Annual Invitational High School Art Exhibition. The exhibition is open through Saturday, May 7th.

A reception for the students, their teachers, families and friends will take place on Saturday, April 16 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Hinsdale Center for the Arts is located in Katherine Legge Memorial Park, 5903 S. County Line Rd., in Hinsdale. Regular HCA gallery hours are: Monday - Friday: 9am -7pm and Saturday: 9am - 4pm, HCA is closed on Sunday. The public may call HCA at 630-887- 0203 for more information.

Following the close of the exhibition at HCA the award winning artworks will be on display at Harris Hinsdale located at 50 S. Lincoln St. from May 9 -14. Suzanne Penn, Awards Juror for the exhibition, recognized the work of ten students for excellence. She wrote in her statement, "This year's high school show brings together an amazing variety of artistic media- all used to express the artistic vision, skill and talent of young people in our area. We should be proud to know that the arts are supported in their school curriculum and that so many have had the opportunity to develop and express their unique artistic voices in such diverse ways. The Elmhurst Art Museum portfolio show is an exhibition, a competition, and a seriers of education programs for high school seniors demonstrating commitment and competency in visual art. All high schools in DuPage, Kane and Will counties are invited to select and submit a portfolio of work from the five most proficient students at their school. Up to twenty-five portfolios are selected for the exhibit, which features the outstanding work of the next generation of visual artists.

In 2011, 17 student portfolios were chosen for the exhibit. Of those 17 selected, three are from South High School in Downers Grove. Senior Maggie Cipriano in Photography, Senior Julianna Estall in Drawing, and Senior Adam Kotel in Photography were selected by the committee as having some of the finest student work in the three county area. On Saturday, April 9, 2011, the Elmhurst Art Museum announced the three top award winners from the exhibit. Maggie Cipriano earned "Honorable Mention," winning a free one year individual membership to the EAM. Additionally, Julianna Estall earned the distinction of "Best in Show." For this honor, Estall earned a free one year individual membership to the EAM, and, a free summer session figure drawing course at the museum.

"We are so proud of these student artists, and, the staff members that sponsor them in this exhibit." said department chairman Glenn Williams. "Debbie Dipert, Marcia Hansen and Michelle Lynn have spent countless hours investing in the artistic development of these student artists." The exhibit will run from April 9-May 1 at the Elmhurt Art Museum.
